Why Implants?

Implant dentistry is quickly becoming the accepted standard of care to replace missing dentition and patients are expecting long-term, predictable options for their dental treatment. Being comfortable with explaining the differences between dentures, bridges and implants and the expectations for treatment outcomes increases patient/clinician relationships and case acceptance.

When the dental team uses an interdisciplinary approach to patient care, having an expanded knowledge of periodontal and restorative options ensures the patient receives the best treatment available to them, based on their individual needs. As dental professionals, it’s our responsibility to know how to evaluate, when to treat, when to refer, and how to discuss the options with our patients.

Learning objectives:

  • Review of periodontal disease and non-surgical therapies – then and now
  • Implant knowledge – terminology, parts, anatomy
  • Establish periodontal guidelines to know when to refer
  • Complete patient care through collaboration

Implant Maintenance – Dental Hygiene and the Implant Patient

As dental implants become the standard of care for tooth root replacement, it’s up to the dental clinicians to know how to treat implant patients in their chair and how to teach our patients the best ways to maintain implant health at home. Recognizing the signs of peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis and knowing how to prevent and treat these issues can be the difference between success and failure of dental implants.

Learning objectives:

  • Identify basic parts and components of implants
  • Define peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis
  • Discuss primary etiologies of peri-mucositis and peri-implantitis
  • Non-surgical treatment of peri-implant mucositis: in office and at home
  • Understand current techniques for instrumentation
  • Recognize the importance of implant maintenance
